May I offer you a hug? Or, perhaps you'd rather Cuddle?
Humans need nurturing touch.
Not just infants.
Not just children.
All of us.
That's a LOT of people with no one handy to hug, or to be hugged by.
To compound the problem, we live in a touch-phobic society. We are wary and guarded, afraid to make ourselves physically or emotionally vulnerable. We are LONELY, yet we treat loneliness as a failure. Is being hungry a failure? Is being sleepy a failure? Loneliness is the body's way of telling you that you need companionship and touch. Touch heals, and your body knows it. But we are afraid to embrace it. We are afraid to embrace each other, because in America, an "embrace" is too often seen as sexual.
Guess what? An embrace DOES NOT have to be sexual. And that's great news.
other cultures--those cultures in which people hug and touch more, where touch is not feared, but encouraged--people enjoy better
emotional (and, in turn, physical) health due to less aggression, less
stress, less depression and anxiety, and self-reported higher rates of happiness.
I don't know about you, but I want some of that. Maybe you do, too?
We're not alone. The Cuddle Movement has been growing worldwide since 2004.
And now, it's in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
People are taking back their power to heal each other through simple touch.
Do you remember the old telephone jingle,
That's some good advice.
